MiSTed: "Rent"

Informal Disclaimer

I love "Rent"! I love "Rent"! I love "Rent"! I also love to write, using the characters from my favorite things. But, I had too much respect and admiration for the late, brilliant Jonathan Larson to mess with his characters in any way. However, judging from the enormous amount of humor that I've found in "Rent", I'd like to think that he had a sense of humor as well. And it is because of that that I decided the best way I could pay tribute to this genius work he had created was with humor. The show makes me laugh and cry and most of all, makes me incredibly happy to be alive. I hope this piece is a fitting salute to the wonderful humor and life of "Rent".

Apologies to any of the real people I've mentioned -- I mean you no disrespect.

Background

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" was an extremely funny show that used to be on Comedy Central in which two robots, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, would sit with a human host, Mike Nelson, and critique and basically make fun of bad science fiction movies. I've seen a copule episodes of MST3K, but most of my knowledge comes from alt.tv.x-files.creative, where a very proficient writer would describe our three critics watching an "X-Files" episode and making fun of it. From there did I draw the idea: what if Mike, Tom, and Crow saw "Rent"? How would they react? What follows is an educated guess...

Note

If you don't get a joke, it's my problem, not yours. I'm a huge "X-Files", "Friends", and "ER" fan, so there are lots of references to those shows. A hint though: Crow likes to find sexual references in almost anything, so that's where a lot of the humor comes from. You'll get the hang of it.

Premise

Mike, Tom, and Crow have been transported from their home on the satellite, Deep 13, to 208 West 41st Street in New York City by their boss, Dr. Forrester, who feels they need a break from all that bad science fiction...
